We
enjoy many activities related to camping, conservation, and the great
outdoors. We schedule several hikes and campouts throughout the year,
visiting local reservations and nature trails. We also take advantage of
camping at Durland Scout Reservation
(formerly Clear Lake) in Putnam Valley, New York. We also try to
include long-distance historical trips, such as Bennington Battlefield,
the Boston Freeedom Trail, Fort Ticonderoga, and many more. Besides the
camping and hiking we do with our troop, there are three district
events we regularly attend, the Fall Camporee, the Winter Klondike
Derby, and the Spring Camporee. We also encourage our boys to attend summer camp with the troop.

Our chartering organization is the Katonah Rotary Club. As active members of the community, we try to assist other organizations whenever we can. We help the Katonah Fire Department
set up and help out at their annual Chili Night fundraiser. We also
take part in the annual "Scouting For Food" collection drive to help
local food pantries.

The troop is supervised by the
adult Scoutmasters, but the patrols are organized and run by the boys.
Within their patrols, they elect their Patrol Leaders, delegate jobs,
and help each other reach their advancement goals on their Trail to

Being a council-wide event, the Troop was able to participate with around a thousand other scouters in Croton Point Park for the Camporee. Once arriving, the troop was able to explore the activities of the program throughout four main areas. These four divisions of the camporee consisted of the Mountain, Arctic, Desert, and Jungle themes. Having a different district run each area, the four areas contained various programs and activities that not only tested the skills of our scouts but also proved to be a blast. Each of these activities could correlate to the theme of the area of which it takes place. Ranging from 4-7 activities, scouts could do favorites such as the mountain themed climbing wall, the arctic cardboard box igloo construction (the program had to provide a sufficient material due to the lack of snow in spring), the desert monkey bring (testing the scouts not to fall into the "snake" infested pit below **assurance that the snakes were in fact rubber**) and the jungle rope swings (challenging scouts to prevent water from pouring out of a soap can or falling in general while swinging to the other side of an invisible cliff). Revolving around group-based work, the scouts had to work together to complete each activity or they would be forced to restart if a scout was not able to succeed (talk about leaving nobody behind). On Saturday night of the event, the scouts were further given wonderful entertainment by a professional hypnotist. With approximately 15 scouts being "hypnotized", the man of talent was able to make these individuals cry, sweat, fall asleep, and dance in front of hundreds of people. Since these scouts were claimed by others to never perform these types of actions if they were not hypnotized, the hypnotist did not only reveal his talent to be anything but a hoax, but was able to receive agreements from the hypnotized by having them say "He's the Man" whenever the man's name was mentioned 15 minutes after the performance. After reluctantly returning home after a splendid event, every scout in Katonah Troop 1 as well as all the other troops can honestly say that thinking that the Spring Camporee was a cool event would be a massive understatement.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8245215689697721613.post-27252354034126206342014-03-11T03:59:00.001-07:002014-03-11T03:59:20.406-07:00Night at Grand PrixBeginning a new annual tradition led by Thom Adamec, Katonah Troop 1 went on an evening trip to Grand Prix in Mt. Kisco for the second time on February 20th. Expecting good racing, good food, and good company, all the boys were eager to participate in this event. Upon arriving at Grand Prix, after signing in and making sure everybody was there, the troop proceeded to the fast track where they were informed about the safety regulations of the track. After everybody was filled in and understood to respect the track, the racing begun. The group was separated into three groups, the adults, the young scouts, and finally the older cool scouts. A system was established where one group would go first for two races while the second would await their turn while the third ate and drank a selection of tasty foods and beverages provided in a private party room. The adults went first, then the younger scouts and finally the older cool scouts. Everybody group held off on eating until they had their two first races. A commendable events during the night consisted of Mr. Esposito's title for fastest times out of the adult group, next the younger scouts demonstrated that they had a need for driver's education although they raced cheerfully just the same, and finally in the older cool scouts group, there was a neck to neck competition between Elias Chaiken and Billy Pappas for first place and fastest time. A winner was never established. After racing, everybody had relaxed, talked merrily and ate until they could eat no more. Soon enough, everybody had gone home and although they went to bed knowing they must wait another year until the next scout event at Grand Prix, they made it clear in terms of who had the most fun in Mt. Kisco on the night of February 20th.
After disembarking from Katonah Elementary School, the troop prepared for a challenging but fulfilling day trip. Once arriving at the area in Carmel, the older kids and adults were tasked with grading patrols on their performance at the first aid station. Whenever scouts came about, they were evaluated and then scored on whether or not their first aid skill is satisfactory. The scouts who were responsible were Ryan Kelleher and Sean Bacon. Other adults who assisted were the returned Eagle Scout: Kyle Winthers, Mr. Bacon, Hank Tchorn, Mr. Eisenhower, Mr. Cyan and Mr. Suda.

The younger scouts in their own two patrols: The Mad Monkeys and Swamp Chickens, first arrived at check in and received a perfect score. After the opening ceremonies, they went to the fire building station. After the first one and a half minutes, the strings were broken (patrols had to construct fires to burn strings that were strung above). Through the determination and efficiency of the boys, they were able to score a perfect 10/10 with an extra 5 points. After fire building, the scouts went to shelter building where they must be evaluated for how efficient their "on the spot" shelter would be. Using a tarp owned by Clifford Munz, the scouts were able to construct an efficient shelter that won them a perfect score. After shelter building, the boys had lunch. After lunch, the boys demonstrated that they must improve first aid skill after scoring a 6.6/10. Once arriving at the Orienteering course, map work was evaluated. The boys were able to score a perfect score if they were able to unscramble letters for the word Iditarod. A total of 2 points were lost. Knot tying was a successful station. All of the boys knew they knots well and thus tied them properly. Running out of time however, a quick pace to ice rescue was needed where the boys had also received a perfect score for rescuing a fellow unconscious scout. To tie up the events, the boys had their sleds checked and received scores for its design, efficiency and criteria met. Both patrols scored well on their sleds. Finally, the winners were announced at the closing ceremonies where the Mad Monkeys had placed 2nd and the Swamp Chickens had placed 3rd. After a victorious day, the troop packed up their gear and went home with good spirits.
On that saturday, troop one Katonah traveled to Durland scout reservation, an area that scouts attend to the Order of the Arrow Ordeal. Once arriving, the scouts and adults consulted staff at Durland and set up for shooting. The attendants were both Jack and Chris Kristensen, Thor and Tom Adamec, Robert Baur and his father Tom, Sean Bacon, and Elias and Robert Chaiken. After shooting a multitude of targets, the group then decided to initiate a competition of who had the best shot. Keeping score and raising the total points needed to go on, everyone shot very well but the one man who defeated all the others was none other than Chris Kristensen himself. After the competition was won, the group shot recreationally once again for another hour or so, the group packed up with assistance from the staff and left for either home or the elementary school.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8245215689697721613.post-58307315422479357152013-10-11T11:10:00.002-07:002013-10-21T21:44:42.983-07:00Troop 1 Hike on October 12: Mianus River GorgeInstead of hiking at Turkey Mountain, we will be hiking in the Mianus River Gorge on 10/12/13. Below is a summary from our Troop historian, Elias Chaiken:

Saturday, the twenty-eighth of september, troop one katonah met at 8:15 A.M. at the katonah elementary school parking lot to prepare for a day trip to the catamount ropes course. Departing at 8:30 A.M., the troop then proceeded to drive to catamount. There were 13 people in total who went and 7 troop scouts amongst them. Among the people who went was Elias Chaiken, Jack Kristensen and his father, Chris Kristensen, Robert Bauer, Jack Kelleher, Thor Adamec and his sister Dakota along with their father Tom Adamec, and finally Marty Stuttman and his Mom Christine, Aiden Cryan and his Dad Bill, and Paul Esposito and his Mom Darlene. After an hour and a half ride with beautiful scenery of upstate New York, the group had finally arrived at Catamount.

Once their, the group went inside and before people were given equipment and training, the group quickly snacked on donuts brought by Tom Adamec. When the group was finished snacking, they proceeded to put valuables into lockers provided in the main indoor room of the building in the area. Equipment such as harnesses, two attached “one at a time lock” carabiners, a zip line pulley and finally a pair of heavy duty gloves to prevent splinters from metal cables in the course. A staff member, stephanie, the proceeded to teach the group the proper procedures used in the course and safety precautions as well. Once everybody in the group was informed and ready, the group then proceeded up a mountain to a thick tree’d area where the actual course is.

When the group had gotten to the course, they were greeted with a wonderful scenery of many people having fun and a nice atmosphere. Proceeding through trails, the group then arrived at the main area where water was provided for hydration and coat hooks so that people could leave their jackets brought due to chilly weather. A starter constructed building with two levels was present. Climbers could take wooden stairs to the first level/floor where they could either go on green or yellow courses. Green was the easiest and yellow was moderate. On the second level, arriving via climbing up a wall was open to blue and black courses. Blue being hard and black being extreme. There were two of each course. Thinking of what to do first, the group then said that everyone had to begin on either a yellow or green course. With the information at hand, the troop then branched off into little groups and proceeded on either yellow or green courses and continued their own ways. Hours of fun passed by and everyone had a wonderful time. The younger scouts proceeded to do either green yellow or blue (in brave enough) courses. The older scouts proceeded to do blue and black diamond courses. A note of achievement would be the group that conquered the double black diamond course, being the hardest one. Among these brave and skilled people were Elias Chaiken, Tom Adamec, Thor Adamec and Dakota Adamec. When people became tired, they then had the option of taking a grand zip line down to the main building. Probably over a quarter mile, a series of ziplines, some long and some incredibly long, took people through the woods, platform to platform and across a main field/hill that is used for skiing in the winter that allowed a fantastic view of the distant woods, mountains, the sunny/perfect amount of clouds sky, and the people and building below. Once the troop, at their own times, took the zipline down, they then met in the food room to eat either lunches they had brought or purchase food at an available indoor food shack. Once rested and relaxed, the troop then parted ways and said goodbye to one another and catamount itself.

If per chance it does open in the next couple of weeks it will primarily only be the USS Intrepid, the Growler (submarine) and the Concorde that you will be able to view. The Space Shuttle Enterprise received some damage to its vertical tail fin during hurricane Sandy and will be repaired and reopen to the public when it is done. With that being said we are going to POSTPONE the USS Intrepid trip to a later date, perhaps in the late winter to early spring so we can also see the Space Shuttle Enterprise along with all of the other exciting aircrafts like the A-12 Blackbird.

In lieu of this change of events we are going to go visit the Military Museum of Southern New England , located in Danbury Connecticut on December 15th. In the preservation of our Nations Military History the museums intention was to maintain the memory of the American Tank Destroyer Units of the second world war. They have a collection of over 10,000 artifacts covering all of the armed forces of the United States. There is also a vivid cross section of 20th century American Military History, and many of their vehicles are extremely rare-often the only example in the Western Hemisphere. Admission for the museum is $4 for those 5 to 18 years of age and $6 for adults.

We will gather at KES at 9:15am, depart @ 9:30 am and we should return to KES sometime just after noon given that the museum is a half hour away. The address for the Military Museum of Southern New England is 125 Park Avenue, Danbury Ct. 06810. Phone number (203) 790-9277.

Please email me if you plan to attend this event so I can get a head count of who is going.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me…. ( h ) 914 232 8834 or ( c ) 914 906 4917

This should be a fun time for all , a good exploration of the past military methods , equipment and a great time together as a troop.

Yours in Scouting,
Thomas Adamec, Assistant ScoutmasterUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8245215689697721613.post-47205170826181173292012-10-29T07:43:00.002-07:002012-10-29T07:43:52.844-07:00Photos from Fall Camporee

Don't forget this weekend is our day trip to the Catamount Zip Line. See Asst. Scoutmaster Chris Kristensen for more details.

Fall Plant Sale
The plants for our fall sale will be available for purchase from this Thursday until they are gone! We will have the gorgeous mums in different sizes as well as some perennials to plant now! Please plan to stop by our driveway (171 Bedford Rd) and tell your friends and neighbors to as well If there is anyone interested in helping sell the plants on Saturday here or downtown (if you're willing to transport them to a busy location), please let me know! Some members of the troop will be going to Catamount for the zipline trip but if you're not going, it would be great to have some help on Saturday for any amount of time you can spare. Give me a call (232-5420) or send me an email if you're available. Thanks and do plan to stop by to pick up some fall color!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8245215689697721613.post-33095987140646337552012-09-07T09:32:00.003-07:002012-09-07T09:32:37.203-07:00Welcome to a new year of Scouting!Welcome to a great new year of Scouting activities! We have a lot of great events planned for throughout the year, and we're looking forward to sharing them with everyone!

The updated troop calendar for 2012-2013 can be found by clicking the link at the top of this page, or by following this link: http://ktny.blogspot.com/p/2012-2013-troop-schedule.html

Any updates to the troop calendar will be posted here. As we stressed in the opening meeting, please review our troop calendar with your own schedules for sports, school plays, band recitals, vacations, etc. We want your son to get the most out of Scouting, and we want them to participate as much as possible.

Just a reminder, meetings start at 7:30p.m., and we meet at Katonah Elementary School gymnasium unless otherwise specified. We're gearing up to prepare for two great events later this month, and we need everyone's help and support to make it happen.
