Katonah takes First and Second Place in 2012 Muscoot District Klondike Derby

The 2012 Muscoot District Klondike Derby was held on Saturday, January 21, at Veterans Park in Carmel, New York. Troops from all over the Muscoot District came together to compete against one another and show off their Scouting skills in this special wintertime event. Katonah Troop 1 was once again in charge of the First Aid activity station. The other stations included Fire Building (Carmel Troop 1), Knot Tying (Troop 1 North Salem), Ice Rescue (Troop 271 Mahopac), and Shelter Building (Troop 440 Patterson). The entire Klondike Derby was organized by Carmel Troop 1.

Our troop had a very strong showing this year! The Mad Monkeys Patrol finished first overall and the Swamp Chickens Patrol finished a close second. Both of our patrols worked very hard at each activity station, and while the Swamp Chickens fell behind slightly at the Fire Building station, they rallied at the Knot Tying station with a perfect score. Congratulations to both patrols for a job well done!

The Muscoot District Klondike Derby is coming up fast! This year's event will held on January 21 at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park. In this photo we see the Swamp Chickens Patrol prepares to start construction on their Klondike sled.

A few hours later, it looks like they have a pretty good sled put together! We'll be working with the Scouts to make sure their sleds meet the requirements for the event over the next few meetings. In the meantime, all Scouts should familiarize themselves with the informational packet for the Klondike Derby.

Court of Honor - Dec. 15

Our Winter Court of Honor will be held this Thursday at 7:30 in the Cafeteria at Katonah Elementary School. All parents, family, and friends of Scouts are invited to attend as we award several of our Troop members with rank advancement. Our Scouts have worked hard this year, so please come out and support them! Light refreshments will be served immediately afterwards.

Also, John Albert has produced a gray sweatshirt hoody with our troop name and logo embroidered and silkscreened on it. Great for outdoor troop events such as the Camporees, the Klondike, trips to West Point etc. They will be available for sale after the conclusion of the Court of Honor. Mr. Albert brought in a surprise guest to talk about the trading markets and how it relates to your personal finances.

Mr. Winthers took a few minutes to talk about cold weather clothing and accessories that will make you comfortable when hiking and camping during the winter months.

West Point trip

At approximately 8:30 AM, November 19th, Katonah Troop 1 yet again traveled to a marvelous land site. Deciding to hold a day trip rather than a campout, Katonah Troop 1 decided to pay a visit to West Point; a historical land site in the revolutionary war and as well as one of the most famous Universities in modern and past U.S. The drive took about and hour before the troop arrived at West Point. As soon as they arrived, Hank Thorn, the troop scoutmaster, checked every scout in for a bus ride and tour around West Point. Having some spare time, the troop decided to quickly observe the museum.

Within the museum, West Point has some spectacular items such as antique World War II uniforms and gun models to muskets to the very own personal pistol of Adolf Hitler. The museum as well had large items such as a World War I tank as well as a model of the Atomic bomb “Fat Man”. After browsing, the bus arrived and the troop began the tour. First, the tour guide brought us to one of three chapels at west point and told the troop about the gothic architecture of the building. After peaking inside and being given a brief history lesson, the tour guide took the troop to the West Point cemetery. Though everyone got choked up at times, the troop managed to observe graves of famous generals, as well as other interesting men and women in history from relatives of Ulysses Grant to passengers of the titanic incident.

Afterward, the tour guide finally took the troop to the monument of the civil war of which was the largest monument of polished granite. The troop was as well able to look out into the Hudson River from that position on the University grounds. Afterward, the tour bus took the troop back to the main building were everyone took interest into buying souvenirs and soon traveled back to Katonah Elementary School.

West Point Day Trip: Nov. 19

On 11/19, Saturday, the troop is taking a day trip to West Point. We have to know by tomorrow (Friday) before 6pm if you want to go. Troop 1's Newest Eagle Scout

Katonah Troop 1 welcomed Nick Kristensen as the newest Eagle Scout to enter our ranks on Sunday, November 6, at a small ceremony at St. Mary's School. Aside from fellow Scouts, parents, and family, several local representatives were in attendance as well. Here are some photos from the event.

Fall Camporee Report

On the 21st of October, at approximately at 4:30 PM, troop drove to Cleak Lake at Durland Scout Reservation for the Fall Camporee District Event. The camporee is an event where scout troops from all over the district come together twice a year in the fall and spring to compete against other Troops in various areas of Scouting skill.

When the troop arrived at Clear Lake, they immediately set up camp and settled into their assigned campsite. Duty rosters were given, water was collected, and bagged dinners were eaten. At 10:30 PM, the troop went to sleep for the big event the next day. Sleep was easy and the troop woke up with plenty of energy and had made breakfast.

The next day, all of the troops were called into a morning meeting to announce the start of the camporee. The pledge was said, the Scout Oath, and Law. Afterward the troops then set out on the competition. After completing our first station, our two patrols decided to proceed together from station to station. Some of the stations that were in the camporee were Shelter Building/Pioneering, Archery, First Aid, Fishing, and Cooking.

Both patrols had done an excellent job by the end of the day and returned to camp to prepare for dinner. We competed in the Iron Skillet cooking competition where both patrols would separately provide dishes with the secret ingredient (bananas) to three judges. The results were received with satisfactory responses (an 8 out of 10 for our two creations: Bananas sliced lengthwise and fried in butter and cocoa mix, and bananas sliced lengthwise and steamed with a mallowmar on top). Afterward, the troop made dinner and went to sleep.

The next morning, another morning meeting was called and the results for the winner of the camporee were announced. Troop I Katonah came in first place with the Mad Monkeys as the leading patrol, and the Swamp Chickens took second place! We were all very excited to learn that we had won! After the meeting, the troop packed up and returned back to KES or drove straight home.

Meeting Cancelled Tonight

Matt Bona earns the rank of Life Scout

Quite a busy night on Thursday! Many awards and congratulations were handed out at the Troop meeting at KES. Matt Bona was awarded his rank of Life Scout, just sneaking in under his 18th birthday. Sharing the occasion with Matt was his mother, who has been his big supporter throughout his Scouting career. At the other end of the spectrum, Jack K. and Joe S. were both awarded the rank of Scout, the first rank you can earn on the Trail to Eagle.

As a special surprise for the troop, everyone was packed into cars for a short "Field Trip" to Carvel in Bedford Hills where everyone was treated to ice cream as thanks for taking First and Second Place at the Muscoot District Fall Camporee. Scoutmaster Hank's challenge to the troop: "Take first place at the Klondike Derby and I'll take you all out to dinner!"

We are also planning a troop activity/campout to the museum at West Point Military Academy for Saturday, November 19. We are investigating options for overnight camping nearby. More details at next week's meeting!

Congratulations and Reminders

Hello Scouts,

Congratulations to all who attended the Fall Camporee last weekend! I'm very proud of each of you and coming in 1st and 2nd place was the icing on the cake! That is a Scoutmaster's pay day! Thank you all for your commitment to the troop: GREAT JOB!

Remember to dry out your tents this week and bring them to Thursday night's meeting. Also a reminder to those of you who already volunteered to help with knot tying the Cub Scout meeting is tonight at KES at 7:00pm.

KES would once again like some scout help at the Halloween Fair on Saturday starting at 11 am. I'll remind you at the meeting but you might like to make advance plans to attend.

Muscoot Fall Camporee this Friday

The 2011 Muscoot Fall Camporee "Galactic Training" will take place this weekend at Durland Scout Reservation at Clear Lake. Patrol Leaders should familiarize themselves with the event, and make sure they bring all of the required gear to participate. The event packet can be downloaded from the Council web site. The event has a Star Wars theme, and participants are encouraged to show up "in costume." The events will include First Aid, Emergency Shelter, Pioneering, GPS, Cooking, and Fishing.

We will be leaving from KES on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm, and returning Sunday morning. Participation in this event is encouraged to ensure the success of the patrols! The troop functions best as a team, and when Scouts are missing, we cannot perform at our best. Early departures are discouraged, as it weakens the patrol, and then the remaining members must clean up and break camp with fewer people. As a reminder, Scouts will return Sunday morning, so there will be plenty of time for homework and other activities upon their return.

We will be leaving from KES at 4:30pm SHARP.

Kaaterskill Falls Hike and Campout

We will be departing from KES on Saturday, October 15, at 7:30am SHARP. Do not skip breakfast and bring a bag lunch to eat on the trail. It takes about two hours to get to the Kaaterskill Falls trailhead, which is located up in the Catskill Mountains near Hunter. After our hike, we will be car-camping at Colgate Lake. Expect our return to be sometime early Sunday afternoon.

There are ways you can prepare for this hike the day before the trip. Loading up on carbs the night before will help you store the energy you'll need for Saturday's activities. A pasta dinner or chicken and rice are great ways to load up. Energy snacks for the trail will help you maintain energy levels, too. Avoid "energy bars" and granola bars, they tend to be made with processed fats and sugars that will slow you down. Instead, consider a trail mix made from dried fruits (raisins, apricots, cranberries, etc), peanuts, walnuts, chocolate chips or Reese's pieces.

Hydration is very important, as you will be exerting yourself and perspiring throughout the day. You may not feel as thirsty, since the cooler weather tricks you into thinking you're fine because you're not sweating as much. Avoid "energy drinks" at all costs! They are mostly sugar and caffeine and other stimulants that are not good for you! "Sports drinks" like Gatorade and Powerade are a good way to help you stay hydrated and regain lost electrolytes, but you should not depend on them alone. Plain water is the best way to stay hydrated, because your body can absorb it quickest. Sometimes plain water doesn't taste good to you after a while, so consider adding in a little fruit juice (orange juice, cherry juice). Avoid powders like Kool Aid and Tang,

Make sure you have hiking boots with ankle support, and you'll also want to wear your wool socks. Bring a day pack that contains your lunch for the trail, an extra pair of wool socks, a personal first aid kit, and anything else you think you might need to enjoy the hike (sunscreen, binoculars, camera, etc). We strongly suggest you leave items like phones, iPods and games at home, or at the very least, in the car. Do not bring them into camp or on the hike!

Here are some photos from Thursday's troop meeting, where we again reviewed how to pack for a campout, and also worked on some advancement. We also discussed the upcoming Muscoot Fall Camporee at Durland Scout Reservation. Patrol Leaders should download the Camporee packet PDF from the council web site and get familiar with the events that will be held.

All Scouts who earn the rank of First Class get the special Troop 1 90th Anniversary neckerchief, which also honors long time Scoutmaster "Doc" Smith ("WHS"). Daniel E. was awarded his neckerchief last night.

Catamount Zip Line trip details

We'll be leaving from KES on Sunday, October 9, at 7:30am SHARP! We'll be on the ropes course for at least three hours, so plan on having lunch up there (pack your own lunch or bring some money to buy lunch up there). Wear comfortable clothing that permits free movement, but should be close fitting and NOT have loose ends that could get caught in ropes course and ziplining equipment. We should return to KES around 4:30pm.

The cost is $44.00 per person, please bring cash or check to reimburse Chris Kristensen for the cost of our reservation.

Join us for Catamount Zip Line trip Oct. 9!

As of this morning, we have 12 reservations for the Catamount Zip Line on October 9. It would be great to get at least three more to qualify for the group discount. We'll also need drivers to help bring Scouts to this activity, located in Hillsdale, New York (about an hour-and-a-half leisurely drive up Route 22). Please contact ASM Chris Kristensen for more details.

Patrols should be planning for the Kaaterskill Falls Hike and Campout for October 15-16, as well as the Muscoot Fall Camporee for October 21-23.

This Thursday's troop meeting will be held at Katonah Elementary School. See you there!

Congratulations to our newest Order of the Arrow members!

The September 29 meeting took place at St. Mary's School.

Congratulations to our newest Order of the Arrow members, Ian F., Greg C., Billy P., and Ryan K.! They completed their ordeal at Durland Scout Reservation and are now members of Ktemaque Lodge 15. The OA is the service organization for the Boy Scouts, helping to maintain our many camps and other properties.

Thanks also to Nick K., Daniel E., Sean B., Kyle W., and Peter Baron for helping out with the Katonah-Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corp. chicken BBQ fundraiser. KBHVAC sold more than 480 chicken dinners! A donation was also made to Neighbors Link of Mt. Kisco. Thanks to the Scouts for their help during the event!

We need Scouts to come help sell popcorn in front of the Wooden Nickel Deli on Saturday, October 1. We need help from 9:00am to 10:20, 10:20 to 11:40, and 11:40 to 1:00pm. Contact John Albert for more information.
We need to get a headcount and drivers for our trip to Catamount Zip Line next weekend. Currently no one is signed up. Contact Chris Kristensen for more information.

Following the trip to Catamount will be our annual Kaaterskill Falls hike, rescheduled to October 15 weekend. Contact Bob Suda for more information.

The weekend after that will be the Muscoot District Fall Camporee at Durland Scout Reservation. All Scouts are expecteed to attend for the whole weekend (Friday night to Sunday morning) and help support their patrol!

Next week, Scouts should bring examples of hiking and outdoors wear, from Gortex jackets to rain shells to Under Armor to thermals and hiking boots!

Sept. 29 meeting at St. Mary's School

Just a reminder, the September 29 meeting will be at St. Mary's School.

Despite a rather gloomy forecast for this past Saturday, Mrs. Pappas, and Mr and Mrs Winthers offered to sell plants in front of the barn at Spring Hill Kennels. We thank them all for their help. They sold quite a few plants (and didn't even get wet!) but we still have lots left... So spread the word to your friends and neighbors! We offer them "self-serve" in our driveway until they are gone. So plan to stop by and choose from our selection of various size mums, flowering kale and perennial asters!

September 15 Meeting

Our September 15 meeting was held in our usual location in the gymnasium at the Katonah Elementary Schoool. We discussed upcoming events and decided to postpone the campout that was planned for this weekend. Scouts Ian and Clifford demonstrated how to properly pack for a campout and answered questions from the patrols. After that, we inspected our tents for damage out in the hallways. Notes were made on any damages and missing parts. We then returned to the gym for a game of tug o' war between the two patrols until it was time to be dismissed. Photos by Otto M. Vondrak

Welcome to a new year of Scouting!

Welcome to a new year of Scouting with Troop 1 Katonah! We had our first meeting on September 8 at St. Mary's School, with an excellent turnout of 21 boys. If you missed our first meeting, don't worry, there's still plenty of time to get caught up. Our next meeting is September 15, and we will be meeting at Katonah Elementary School (our normal location) at 7:30 PM. To make sure we start on time, you should arrive by 7:15, in uniform, with your Scout Handbook.

Two exciting events are coming up already! The weekend of September 17-18, we will be camping out at Pound Ridge Reservation. Patrol members should contact their patrol leaders to let them know they are coming. We must make our reservation this week. We also must make reservations for our trip to Catamount Zip Line on October 9.

First Meeting September 8 at St. Mary's School

Hopefully you are having a great summer and getting ready for the start of another scout year!

Our first meeting will be on Sept. 8, at 7:30 at St. Mary's School, Valley Road, Katonah. Hope to see you all there. If you know of someone not on this email list who should be getting this reminder, please forward this to them.

We will once again be selling beautiful fall flowers as a fundraiser for the troop. The plants are scheduled to arrive sometime during the week of September 19, so we will soon have chrysanthemums, flowering kale and perennial asters for sale in our driveway at 171 Bedford Rd.! Tell your friends and neighbors about the sale and encourage them to stop and shop! Better still, offer to deliver them to their door! Call Mary with any questions (914-232-5420) and plan to sign up to sell the plants here on Saturday the 24th. We'll have a sign up sheet at the meeting on Thursday the 15th.

As the new Scouting year begins, it's time to think about POPCORN! Troop 1 Katonah sells popcorn each year as a way to raise funds to support our activities for the year. September 8 will be our Popcorn Kickoff. Popcorn sales begin September 10. On September 24, we will begin our "Show and Sell" sales at various locations around Katonah. Our popcorn sale ends on November 5, and orders are due November 12. Orders will be picked up on December 3, and all payments are due December 16. Helloooooo CAMPERS!

Well, it is that time of year again where we start to get ready for our annual Summer Camp week in the Adirondacks! Yes, in only a few short weeks, Troop 1 Katonah will make our yearly trek to the outstanding Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation in Brant Lake, New York. And this year, we have a whopping 22 boys and 6 adults going! Our Cimarron campsite at Camp Buckskin will be bursting with activity and we will all have another outstanding week of Scouting and fun activities including swimming, zip line, cope courses, rock climbing walls, Mt. Stevens , cardboard boat races, pie eating contests, Waubeeka caves, horseback riding, Troop shoots, and so much more.

So, a few reminders. Parents, it is very important for you to read the Parents Guide that was given to your son in order for him to have as good a time as he should and not be disapointed that he forgot something. If you have misplaced the Parents Guide, please go to www.wpcbsa.org where you can download it to read and/or print. One thing that I ask for not listed in the Guide is to also bring a daypack or large bookbag/knapsack for our overnight up Mt. Stevens.

Please make sure that the Medical Forms accompany you to our mustering point at KES on Sunday, August 7, 2011 at 8:15 AM sharp. Please do this soon if you have not done so. A yearly checkup to complete this form is required. Adults too!

Please read all requirements for your Merit Badges. Some require pre work to be done prior to camp. Please do this to avoid "partial completions" of merit badges. Merit Badge pamphlets can be purchased at the Scout Service Center Store, and can be shared. Check and see if the troop has the latest issue in their library before purchasing your own.

Adults, please plan on driving. With this large group, we will need vehicles with as many seats as possible. Mr. Suda's pickup truck will take the gear as is usual. If anyone knows of anyone else who would like to go, please let me know at (917)939-5416. It is not too late.

Maine canoe trip - June 25-28

We will be meeting at Katonah Elementary School parking lot at 8:30am and departing at 9:00am. The trip can take up to six hours. Please pack a bag lunch. Also important to bring any personal prescribed medications for allergies and other conditions. A full pack list was provided to all Scouts who are attending.

We will be returning on Tuesday, June 28.

Board of Review, Whitewater Rafting Trip

We tried something a little different for Thursday's meeting. The troop was split up into four groups. Each was given a pile of newspapers and some tape. Their task: create a table that would support an empty cardboard box, then fill that box with weight to test the design. We had some pretty surprising results ranging from no support at all to quite sturdy!

Next Thursday, June 9, is Board of Review. You only need to attend if you are going before the Board of Review to get your next rank. If you need a Scoutmaster's Conference prior to Board of Review, you need to call Scoutmaster Hank Tschorn at 232-5420 and schedule one BEFORE THURSDAY. Whetehr or not you go to Board of Review, everyone is invited to enjoy the Katonah Fire Department Carnival!

The Whitewater Rafting Trip will be June 11 and Asst. Scoutmaster Chris Kristensen will be posting information about that soon.

REMINDER: Katonah Firemen's Parade is Wednesday, June 8, stepping off at 7:00pm. Enjoy the parade (you may see some people you know marching!) and don't forget to support the Fire Department and enjoy the Carnival!

Spring Camporee a Success!

We opened Thurday's meeting outside to take advantage of the nice weather.

This year's Spring Camporee had the Scouts start the event from Route 301 and hike about a mile and a half into camp.

We have returned from a successful outing at the 2011 Muscoot District Spring Camporee! Katonah Troop 1 placed third in the competition and second for campsite inspection! Way to go, Scouts! If you have troop equipment in your possession, please make sure it is cleaned and ready for return at Thurday's meeting. It is extremely important to air out the tents and dry them or else they will be destroyed and we will have to replace them at Scouts' expense.

A reminder that the 5/19 meeting will be held at St. Mary's School.

Spring Camporee This Weekend

The Muscoot District Spring Camporee will be held this weekend. We will arrive at Clear Lake between 5:00pm and 6:00pm, and the Scouts will be hiking in to the registration point. All Scouts should have hiking boots with ankle support, and a frame pack that has been packed with the necessary equipment for the weekend. If you're not sure what to bring, please contact your patrol leader. All Scouts should bring their packed pack to Thursday meeting for inspection. We will depart KES on Friday, and return on Sunday morning.

Don't forget your registration for Camp Read. Just a reminder that Summer Camp fees are due. If you pay past 6/1, there is a 25$ penalty increasing the cost to $370. Adults are still $110 and if you are going, I need that too. Please give all checks to me made out to Westchester Putnam Council, BSA. Boys cannot be registered for merit badges until this is paid, and some badges close out soon. Your son was given a Parent’s Guide – this is crucial for you to read in order for your son to have the best possible time. The Council website is also a good source for information as well. We are leaving on Sunday 8/7 are returning on the following Saturday 8/13. So far, only 6 boys are registered, so please hurry. Also, the medical forms for both adults and boys is onerous, so please make sure this is completed in a timely way. Once registered, your son needs to give me his 4 merit badge choices. It will be a great week as usual!!

Troop Whitewater Rafting Trip - June 11

In regards to the Troop Whitewater Rafting trip on June 11, attached please find the BSA Activity Consent Form (for all participants under the age of 21) and the Lehigh River Waiver Form (for ALL those attending).

Since I will be collecting all the forms you can either hand them to me at one of the troop meetings, mail them to 13 Cottage Place, Katonah, NY 10536, drop them in the mail box at that address or email them back to me. Please hand them as soon as you get a chance, so that we have all the forms in, well in advance of the event, even if you are 50-50 on attending at this point.

Chris Kristensen our event organizer will fill you in the logistics and details of this trip at the troop meetings. All I can say is, everyone had a blast last year, with both navigating the currents of the Lehigh River and with the water bucket fights that went on between the rafts. Plan on getting wet!

Hi Everyone,

Hope you've had a great spring break and that you've gotten lots of orders for plants! Please bring the completed Master order form and all money to the scout meeting on Thursday. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me this week. If you need an order form, there is one on the troop's website. Thanks to those of you who've already given us your orders!

The plants will be arriving sometime the week of May 9. I will give you a call when your orders are ready to be picked up. Please try to get them as soon as possible- I know the Camporee is the end of that week so that might create an issue for some of you- I can hold onto the plants for a couple of days if absolutely necessary.

If anyone is available during the day and willing to help unload and sort the plants, please let me know and I'll get in touch with you when I know exactly when the delivery is coming (it's usually between 8-5, but I'll know better on Monday the 9th. We typically get the plants on either Wed or Thursday of that week)

Thanks for your help making this a good fundraiser for the troop. Also spread the word that we will be selling "leftovers" from our driveway while supply lasts.

Troop Hike a Success

On Saturday, April 9, Assistant Scoutmaster Otto Vondrak led eight Scouts from Troop 1 Katonah embarked on a Troop Hike to Breakneck Ridge in Cold Spring, New York. It was a challenging hike that brought us up 1000' in elevation, overlooking the Hudson River, Bannerman's Island, Storm King Mountain, and West Point. Fortunately, there were no broken necks or other injuries as we enjoyed the challenge of the hike and the spectacular views of the Hudson Highlands. Thanks to Otto's friend Mike Smith, an experienced outdoorsman and former Scout from Rochester who came down to help lead the hike (Mike also came down to help with the 2010 Fall Camporee).

About half-way up the first part of the trail, this view looking to the north shows Bannerman's Island sitting alone in the Hudson. The city of Newburgh lies across the river.

About 700' up, we paused to enjoy views of Storm King Mountain.

At about 1000' feet up, we paused to enjoy the view.

Executive Board Member Bill Kelly had the vision and desire twenty-nine years ago to organize a fundraiser to support youth with special needs. As a result of organizing each of the past twenty-eight Bowl-O-Rees, over a million dollars has been raised to support this initiative. Our in-school Champions program for youth with special needs is being offered to nearly 1,000 youth in the Yonkers and Mt. Vernon School Districts. Troop 1 Katonah participated in the William E. Kelly Bowl-o-ree on March 6, 2011 at the Carmel Bowl. We had 7 boys bowl and they raised over $660. All the boys will receive patches and three boys raised over $100 each and will receive t-shirts.

The 2011 Muscoot District Klondike Derby was held on January 22 at Durland Scout Reservation at Clear Lake. Weather conditions were perfect for the Klondike, bright and sunny with a healthy snow pack on the ground. The "Transformers" event spawned many interesting sled designs. Mount Kisco Troop 1 took first place in the event, followed by Mahopac Troop 271 and Katonah Troop 1. Photos by Otto M. Vondrak.

The Snowshoe Relay Race was conducted by Vista 101. Each patrol had to construct a pair of snowshoes and run a relay race. Each racer was required to tie a knot before handing the snowshoes off to the next racer.

Mike Cunningham and Troop 14 Lake Carmer ran the Klondike Games station, one of the activities was the Caber Toss.

The other activity at Klondike Games was Tomohawk Throwing. Each participant had to lash a wooden blade to a handle, then properly throw the tomahawk the greatest distance.

Since they were camping out, Vista 101 spent most of the day constructing an igloo.

Webelos Klondike, Bowl-o-Ree this weekend

The Klondike Derby is a winter competition event for Webelos Scouts during which dens pull their Klondike sleds along a course in the woods. Along the way, they will be tested on Scouting skills at about 10 stations. The event finishes with the awarding of “The Pole”, patches and ribbons. The Klondike Derby provides an opportunity for Scouts to apply their Scouting skills in a fun competition. The event comes alive with the use of the lore of the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon.
Troop 1 Katonah will be running the Knot Tying Station at the Muscoot Distruct Webelos Klondike Derby this Saturday, March 5. We need volunteers (youth and adults) to help run this station.

This is a reminder that on Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 pm at Carmel Bowl, Troop 1 will be participating in the 31th Annual William E Kelly Bowl-O-Ree to support the Special Needs Youth Learning for Life Program. All the funds raised from our troop will benefit the Special Needs Youths! Each boy will bowl two (2) games and please have them wear their uniforms. Prizes are as follows:

Patches for all participants
$100+ club shirts for boys who raise that much or more
Prizes for the top 30 boys who raise the most (in the council)
Grand prize drawing for a Tiger Cub, Cub Scout, Webelos, Boy Scouts, Venturer or Explorer who raises more than $300.00 to win a $1,500 Savings Bond.

We handed out the pledge sheet at the troop dinner to all the scouts so they were able to collect pledges. There is a minimum pledge per boy of $35. As mentioned, we have decided to collect flat donations instead of a per pin pledge. The boys should then collect the money at the time of pledge so it can be turned into the bowling coordinators at the event. The boys must have this pledge sheet and money to bowl.

This year, the requirements for the sleds are that they must be able to "transform" into an emergency shelter, using any materials the Scouts see fit. The Mad Monkeys Patrol debuted their sled at last night's troop meeting at Katonah Elementary School.

Happy New Year! Our first meeting of 2011 will be tonight, Thursday January 6. We'll be planning our activities for the Muscoot Klondike Derby coming up on January 22. Also, don't forget this weekend we will be traveling to West Point to see the Army Black Knights (5-12-1) battle the Tigers (10-8-2) from Rochester Institute of Technology. Tickets have already been pre-ordered, and reserved only for Scouts and guests who placed reservations with Kyle. Bring $8.00 to the event to cover the cost of the ticket. We will be leaving from KES at 4:45pm! You may want to bring a bag dinner. Expect to return between 10:30 and 11:00pm.

On Novenber 6, Troop 1 Katonah traveled north to hike to Kaaterskill Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in New York State. An area made famous by the paintings of Thomas Cole and the lore of Washington Irving, the falls continue to draw thousands to enjoy its beauty. This past weekend, Troop 1 Katonah took a trip to Kaaterskill Falls. We departed at 7:15 and arrived at about 10 o'clock in the morning at our launch point for our day hike. We spent the day on a hike going up one of the mountains, which was approximately 3,200 feet above sea level. We stopped at key points along the way that had great views of the Empire State: "Artist's Rock," which was a great big rock ledge that stuck out of the mountain and was an attraction for many in the area, because of its amazing view (one can see how it probably got its name!); "Sunset Rock" was where we stopped for lunch, and was also said to have the greatest view of the colorful sunsets throughout the year--right over a lake, and between two snow-capped mountains; and finally "Newman's Ledge," which was another lookout point with beautiful scenery, and also equipped with a straight drop-off for about 800 feet!

When we finally finished the hike, it totalled just about 7 miles, and everyone was EXHAUSTED! Next, we set up our campsite, which was about a 10 minute drive from where we hiked. A short walk through some brush, assembling our site, and 20 minutes later we were ready for dinner. The patrol menus had quite the selection that night: Ribs, grilled chicken, meatball soup, and chili. With our stomachs full, and some time by the fire, it was time to endure a night of 20-degree atmosphere. It was cold, windy, and frosty, but we all made it through with few complaints.

Breakfast that morning brought us back up to normal body temperature, consisting of lots of oatmeal, hot chocolate, and yes, a S'MORES SUB: A foot-long Italian loaf, with 3 bars of milk chocolate, 2 sliced bananas, and half a bag of large marshmallows, all wrapped up in 3 sheets of tin foil--quite the breakfast snack! After we were done with our morning feeding, we packed up camp and headed out to the highlight of the trip, Kaaterskill Falls! It was about a half-mile hike in from the highway where all of the tourists parked. Before we knew it, we were there, sitting at the bottom of this beautiful product of nature. Two large tiers of water being fed by the mountains make this the largest and tallest waterfall in New York State. We sat there for a while, looking on at its greatness, but then it was time for us to depart. The relaxing ride home left us with a memorable trip, with many already making plans for next year's adventure.

Mohican-Muscoot Fall Camporee - October 22-24

Just a few photos from the Mohican-Muscoot Fall Camporee, held October 22-24 at Camp Strang, operated by the Housatonic Council BSA in Goshen, Connecticut. The troops gathered for a great weekend of shooting sports, including rifle, shotgun, muzzle-loaders, archery, BB guns, slingshots and even a tug of war! Here's just a few photos from that weekend...

Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Kyle Winthers

On Thursday, October 14, Katonah Troop 1 held its 65th (by our records) Eagle Court of Honor for Kyle Winthers. The entire troop, friends, and family packed the gymnasium at Katonah Elementary School for this special event.

Demolition Derby Night!

On September 18th, Troop 1 Katonah took a trip to Middletown and entered the Orange County Fair Grounds to get good seats for the "Demolition Derby: Eve of Destruction." It was an action-packed night where racers from all over the region brought whatever wheeled vehicle they didn't mind being smashed to a million pieces and put them through the paces at the dirt track. There were several races and challenges during the night, each with a different theme. The first event was a "slingshot" race, which consisted of slingshot cars going 80 mph. Next, were the old cars that people put racing kits on, and they raced them while smashing each other up, trying to cross the finish line first. The endurance race was fun, and some cars limped to the finish line running only on their rims! Then next events that were based purely on destruction included: The trailer race (try to destroy the other persons trailer and save yours), the school bus race (40' yellow obstructions longer than the track is wide), and a big-rig truck speeding into a school bus that's standing on end. We finished up the night viewing the "elimination round." Drivers had to keep their cars within the set boundaries, and be the driver with the last working car. As drivers mercilessly smashed up their opponents' cars, pieces flew, tires ripped, and fires blazed. A good time was had by all there, and everybody looks forward going again next year!

Troop 1 Katonah has returned from another great year at Camp Read! Our Scouts earned a grand total of 63 merit badges during the week-long program! A congratulations to our boys and a hearty thanks to all the dads who were able to take a week out of their lives to make it all possible. The troop climbed Mt. Stephens and camped out overnight. They were up at the break of dawn to enjoy the sunrise and begin the trek back down the mountain.

Get Ready for Summer Camp!

Hi Camp Read Campers and Parents! It's almost time for us to return to our summer home at the Cimarron Site at Camp Buckskin!

It is very important at this time to make sure you have gotten your yearly checkup and had your doctor fill out the (very long) Medical Form. ADULTS TOO. Please bring this completed form with you to the Parking Lot at KES at 8:30 on Sunday August 8th along with a parent signed permission slip for miscellaneous activities we might do.

Both forms can be found in the Camp Read Parents guide that was given out earlier in the year. If this is misplaced, it can be printed off of the Westchester-Putnam Council Website.

Parents please read this very important Parents Guide! There is much information that you will need for your son to have the very best time at Camp. Boys, please look at your Merit Badge selections and make sure you have all of the prerequisites completed before Camp so you do not leave Camp with an incomplete.

We have 17 Boys and 5 Fathers attending this year! Outstanding! If anybody hears of a boy who is not going and has changed his mind and would like to go, please give him my number, which is (917)939-5416. Drivers, please choose vehicles that have as many seats as possible with the gear going in Bob Suda’s truck as we will probably be maxed out in this regard.

Mianus River Gorge Cleanup

Just because school is out doesn't mean our Scouts are idle! Scouts and adult leaders from Troop 1 Katonah participated in the July 10 Mianus River Gorge Cleanup Day at the Mianus River Gorge Preserve in Bedford. Our Scouts patrolled the riverbed and removed a full truck load of garbage, tires, sofas, motors, golf balls and more. After hauling out all sorts of items that did not belong, the troop enjoyed a good lunch. Want to help out? Check out the Preserve's website for future cleanup dates and other activities. Maine Canoe Trip Photos

Katonah Troop 1 enjoyed its 54th year on the Saco River during the annual Maine Canoe Trip. Using the cabin that former Scoutmaster Doc Smith left to our troop as a base, we enjoyed a two day overnight trip that started in New Hampshire and ended on Lovell's Pond in Fryeburg, Maine. The Mad Monkeys Patrol was the winner of this year's contest, and everyone had a great time as usual. Here are just a few photos from the weekend by Asst. Scoutmaster Otto Vondrak...

Saturday morning we had made our way to the Saco River. It was so hot out, Asst. Scoutmaster Dan Tschorn decided to go for a little swim!

June whitewater rafting adventure

On June 12, Troop 1 Katonah went on a exciting white water rafting trip in Pennsylvania. We departed form KES at 7:00am, and we arrived in Jim Thorpe, PA around 9:30am. Once there, we made our way to the check-in center, where we rented our wet suits for the day ahead of us. Everything was quite organized, even with so many people in one area.

We waited about an hour and a half before lining up to receive our life jackets, and boarding passes (luckily which nobody lost!). All of the buses were then loaded up, and we took a twenty minute ride to our launch site for the Lehigh River. The guides for the trip assembled all of us in our rafts in the area and went over every detail, and safety regulations of the trip before we entered the water. The contents of the raft included a water-bailing bucket, and a water tight bucket for our lunches.

When we entered the water, we soon realized why these people were called the "White Water Challengers." We met many rapid parts of the river, and we had the maneuvers explained to us before we went through them. During the parts of the river where we weren't battling waves and rocks, everyone was getting drenched in the on-going bail-bucket splash war between all of the rafts. We stopped for lunch at about 1:00, on a big rock where all of the rafts were parked.

When our journey down the river continued, we finally encountered the most intense rapids of the day, where everyone fought to keep their raft from hitting big rocks, or getting stuck. We had to go through these rapids in an orderly fashion to prevent back-ups or collisions. When we finally conquered the part of the river that we set out to do that day, we took turns getting our rafts and gear out of the river, and on to the trucks.

We spent four and a half hours on the river and covered a lot of distance. The bus ride this time took only about ten minutes to get back to the check-in area. Before we left, we all took a quick look in the gift shop, and got a little food for the ride home. We were all exhausted, but we're looking forward to a return trip next year!

Please review this and their website for helpful hints on how to make this the best trip possible for things like what to wear. As stated before, please bring your own lunch in a zip lock bag and some extra cash in case you may like to rent a wetsuit. I have just paid the balance so anyone who can please pay me the remainder for your party, it will be very much appreciated. Driving Directions are on the website. And we have plenty of Drivers!. Remember we are leaving KES at 7 AM on Saturday the 12th of June, so please be there on time! Please give me a call if you have any questions at all.

TIMELY ARRIVAL: Our trip times are strictly regulated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, so we're usually unable to wait for late arrivals. Be sure everyone arrives no later than your "Arrival Time" listed above.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: We caution against relying on GPS or Internet mapping services because they sometimes provide faulty information. Precise and accurate driving directions are available on our web site. Go to www.whitewaterchallengers.com, click on "Lehigh River," then click on "Driving Directions." From Interstate 80, Exit 273, you'll want to go west on Rt 940 for 1/2 mile; then turn left onto Lehigh Gorge Drive; go 4.8 miles; then turn right onto Buck Mountain Road; go 1 mile; then turn right onto StageCoach Road; go 300 yards to our entrance on the right.
PROPER FOOTWEAR: Flip-flops, "crocs" and bare feet are not permitted on the river. Old sneakers are the best. Sturdy sandals (like TEVA's) are acceptable. Appropriate footwear can be purchased or rented at our Rafting Center.
WHAT NOT TO TAKE IN YOUR RAFT: Leave dry clothes and towels in your car for after the trip. Don't take in your raft any valuables, keys, coolers, alcohol, glass containers, pets, or cameras that aren't waterproof. Car keys may be left at the Rafting Center.
WHAT TO WEAR & BRING: You WILL get wet. On warmer days, a swim suit or T-shirt and shorts are fine. Sunscreen and a visor or brimmed hat are always a good idea. In cooler weather a windbreaker is useful. Avoid cotton, especially sweat shirts and pants, which will actually make you colder. Paddling jackets and wet suits can be rented at the Rafting Center. One driver's license is required for up to six rentals. If wearing valuable glasses, we strongly recommend securing them with reliable glass-straps.
RAFT GROUPINGS: Organize your group into rafting teams (usually 6 or 7 per raft) before you get to the river. Make sure there's at least one adult in each raft.
RIVER LUNCHES: At the Lehigh, you're welcome to bring a light lunch (no alcohol, glass bottles or coolers) or you can order box lunches in advance, at a discount, from us. Advance lunch orders must be placed, as a group, at least 2 days before your trip. (Be sure to pick up your reserved lunches at the Rafting Center BEFORE you board the shuttle bus to the river.) Each raft includes a 5-gallon water-tight container for your food.
BREAKFAST & DINNER: Breakfast and dinner are served at the Rafting Center most days. Advance reservations are recommended. If you're having breakfast with us, be sure to come earlier than your Activity "Arrival Time" listed above. Dinner hour last until about 1/2 hour after the last trip returns to the Rafting Center.
SOUVENIR PHOTOS: We try to capture a photo of each raft in the rapids. You can purchase these at our Rafting Center after the trip.
OUTFITTER SHOP: Our outfitter shop carries souvenir shirts and caps, and an assortment of items you might want or need for your trip. Take a moment to browse, before and after your tour.

2010 Centennial Camporee

Troop 1 Katonah has just been through one of the greatest experiences in its 90 year history- the Westchester-Putnam Council 2010 Centennial Camporee! Our troop, along with 1,300 other people, occupied the Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill from April 30-May 2. The trip started out by going on a half hour trip up to Blue Mountain, where we signed in for the weekend. From the parking lot, we went on a twenty foot hike to the campsite. Campsites were side by side to each other, and there were unfamiliar troops from other districts surrounding us.

After setting up camp, the schedule was pretty simple, starting with our Scoutmaster and SPL encampment meeting, where we learned more on the events to come. The troops had been split up into eight encampments, and they would be traveling with each other throughout the day. We finished off the night with encampment vs. encampment games, consisting of a tug-of-war between different troops. Katonah fought well.

Being awoken at 6:30 was not our usual procedure, but the Scouts were up and at it in no time. After a brief flag ceremony in our encampment, all of the encampments were assembled on the Parade Field for the main ceremony. Seeing 1,300 other Scouts gathered together was quite a sight. We started with the camp flag raising ceremony, and then the encampment leaders received further details and instructions on how the day would proced.

Our first activity area was Scouting Past, which featured a vintage campsite and memorabilia, a tent full of patches and Council history, tomahawk throwing, archery, and old-fashioned ice cream making. There were also some vintage cars, including a 1951 Willys, a 1950 Dodge pickup, and a 1970's State Trooper car. This event was an interesting learning experience for all the Scouts, showing them what it was like in the beginning, how the insignia were very different, and how making ice cream became a recreational game! Our Assistant Scoutmaster Otto Vondrak was responsible for putting this area together.

Next, we moved on down to the waterfront for the Aquatics activity area. At this station there activities such as kayaking, canoeing, fly fishing, and a SCUBA demonstration. For the kayaking and canoeing activity, Scouts were sent into the lake to either paddle around or have their own races. At fly fishing, we were able to practice our casting abilities, and we also were able to watch somebody actually tie all of the different flies for fishing. At the SCUBA setup, we got to see all of the different gear that is used in SCUBA diving, which was pretty impressive. When our time here was up, we took a lunch break, and lunch was served to us right there. We each got a ham sandwich, chips, cookies, and a soda.

Our group then moved on to Field Sports, where physical activities were held, including a dodgeball tournament, rock climbing wall, a super obstacle course, three-way tug-of-war, and a trebuchet! Troops within the encampments dueled in an intense dodgeball tournament with teams of sixteen players, and two games going at once. Scouts could also compete one on one in the obstacle course, where they need to run, jump, and crawl to the finish line. They could also test there physical strength, climbing up thirty feet of rocks. How about being able to compete in a tug-of-war game against two other troops.... at the same time! Or maybe even having the urge to have tennis balls catapulted at you so that you could hit the tennis balls back with tennis rackets!

Finally, our encampment moved on to Scouting Future, where Scouts got to take their first ride on the famous Segway, climb a rock wall brought in by the National Guard, go to the Entergy demonstration, or do a geocaching activity with a GPS. The Scouts' favorite was riding on the Segways, where they had to go through a traffic-cone course, sending them out and back around, going in and out of the cones. At the Entergy demo, we got to learn about nuclear energy, and we got to use tools like a Geiger counter to measure radioactive material. In geo-caching, Scouts were sent into the woods with a GPS, and learned how it works, while searching for the geocache location.

Once done, with the events, encampments were sent back to their campsites to get ready for religious services. After that, we were dismissed back to our campsites to prepare dinner. We saw some pretty interesting meals being made throughout the camp. Once again, all eight encampments were assembled at the Parade Field. The SPL's from Katonah Troop 1 made up the evening Color Guard, retiring the American flag. After some brief remarks by Scout Executive Marc Andreo, there were skits, songs, a slideshow of the day's events, and the closing ceremonies for the camporee. Afterwards, everybody was invited to enjoy cupcakes, and a showing of Back To The Future. We called it a night, and we all went to sleep after an exciting day of fun.

In the morning, we had breakfast, and then everyone broke down their camps, and said goodbye. This was an experience that none of us will forget, and many years from now, we will look back, and remember that we were a part of something pretty special.

Katonah Troop 1 attended the Westchester-Putnam Council's Centennial Camporee this past weekend at Blue Mountain Park in Peekskill, New York. This special all-council event celebrated the history of Scouting in America coupled with fun and engaging activities for the Scouts. Both the Mad Monkeys and the Swamp Chickens attended this special event, and everyone had a great time. Look for a full review later! Photos on the Council web site can be found here.

Arrow of Light Ceremony - May 8

On Saturday, May 8, Troop 1 Katonah will be welcoming new Scouts when we attend Pack 1 Katonah's Arrow of Light ceremony. The Arrow of Light award is the highest award available to Cub Scouts. It requires the Scout to have earned the Webelos Scout badge and eight activity badges. In addition to the skill and activity requirements of the preceding ranks, the Arrow of Light requires Scouts to learn the Scout Promise and Scout Law, and visit one meeting and one activity of a Boy Scout troop, in preparation for advancing to the Boy Scouts.

All members of Troop 1 Katonah will be on hand to help celebrate this achievement and welcome our new Scouts! Meet us at 7:30 pm at the shelter in Katonah Memorial Park.

Hockey Night at West Point - Feb. 13

Katonah Troop 1 enjoyed a fun night of exciting college hockey as the Army Black Knights took to the ice against the visiting Tigers from the Rochester Institute of Technology at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The game was hard fought on both sides, yet RIT came up with a victory that night with a score of 5-2. The Scouts had a great time, and thanks to all the parents who helped drive.

Kaaterskill Falls Campout

The 2009 Kaaterskill Falls campout was great this year. The weather was perfect with November 7 weekend with sun and mid 50's on Saturday with low's in the high 20's at night. On Saturday, we drove straight to South Mountain and hiked approximately 5 miles around the "Rim Trail" to the site of the "Mountain House" that we visited to last year.

We had lunch on the hike and all along the way were very dramatic views from the trail which at many times followed along the edge of an extremely high cliff! Even at the end of the hike, we enjoyed wonderful views of the Hudson Valley all the way to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. After the hike, we went straight to our campsite near Colgate Lake, set up camp, made dinner, and had our usual fun campfire.

In the morning, we broke camp and drove to Kaaterskill Falls and made the .5 mile hike up to see them and were just as spellbound by their beauty as last year. And were then on our way home after a very fun and exciting campout.

Troop 1 at the site of the Catskill Mountain House, a famous resort the opened in 1823 and was in continuous operation until the outbreak of World War II in 1941. The abandoned hotel was acquired with the land by the state in 1962, and the hotel was razed in a controlled burn in 1963.

Katonah Takes First at Combined Fall Camporee

On October 23, 24, and 25, Troop 1 Katonah attended the 2009 Combined Fall Camporee, consisting of both Manitoga and Muscoot districts. When arriving at Durland Scout Reservation Friday night, troops set up camp in a number of campsites, ranging from down in the 30's to way up in the 40's. Saturday morning, both districts assembled their troops at Campsite 37 for the opening ceremonies, where they were assigned their patrol numbers, and starting stations. After some opening remarks from Otto, patrols were dismissed and sent off to hit the trail and compete for the highest score.

The skill stations included First Aid where patrols had to tend to a fallen patrol leader who suffered from a compound upper arm fracture; Signaling in which patrols had to decifer a Morse code message sent by wig-wag; Cooking which required patrols to make a meal from scratch using tinfoil techniques on a bed of coals; and Maps and Trail Signs where patrols had to follow a course of "blazes" and Scout trail signs to reach a message at the end. We also competed in a Pioneering station where all of the troops assembled and each built an A-frame structure and linked them together to form a ring aroung the ceremonial campfire ring. That evening, each troop brought down their troop flag and hung it from their frame, displaying 15 flags from two districts.

Events ended a little earlier than usual because severe weather was expected. Some troops elected to head home early. That night, a monsoon struck camp, flooding out a couple of troops, leading to the cancellation of the big campfire in which skits would be performed, awards handed out, and the flag stands be shown off. Our troop managed to stay warm and dry throughout the storm, even though we were stuck inside our tents.

The next morning, everyone made their way back to Campsite 37 for the closing ceremony and remarks from Otto. A twenty foot tower was built by some of the senior Scouts the day before, and Otto conducted the closing ceremony from a platform high above the fire ring. A short prayer service was held, the scores were announced, and all of the Scouts recieved candy as a reward for a job well done. Troop 1 Katonah ended up sharing first prize, tying for top position with Ossining Troop 49 from the Manitoga district.

Even though the weekend was a little rainy, we managed to field three patrols in the competition. Everyone had a good time and we're now looking forward to the winter Klondike Derby!

In his own words: The First Maine Canoe Trip, 1954

Dr. William H. Smith (known simply as “Doc” to his friends) was Scoutmaster of Katonah Troop 1 for more than fifty years, serving the youth of our community and providing endless life instruction with a good dose of humor. As we continue to sort through Doc’s vast collection accumulated over a lifetime of Scouting adventures, we have discovered this special report on the very first canoe trip to Maine in 1954! It sounds like the first trip was truly an adventure, and we learn where certain traditions came from (like going to the movies in North Conway). We present Doc’s report in the only way we can… in the colorful descriptive tone of his own words! –Otto Vondrak, ASM

“Friday the 13th dawned bright and clear, perhaps if would be more correct to say, really dawned. This was an important day for Boy Scout members of Troop No. 1, Katonah, since it was the first time in the history of this troop that we have really tried a camping expedition. I had been toying with the idea during the winter of taking some of the boys on an outing up in Maine, and after a certain amount of consideration had actually gotten around to planning it. Unfortunately, my particular work as a pediatrician does not allow a lot of time for extra curricular activities, so a great many of the details were left until the last minute.

Our announced starting time was about 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning, August 14, 1954. I had planned to use most of the preceding day for last minute packing. As luck would have it, that particular day was probably the busiest day I had since I have been in practice. Consequently I did not get through in the office until about 5:00 in the afternoon. The station wagon which we were to use through the courtesy of one of the members of the Katonah Rotary Club unfortunately at the time was having a little shift trouble and we did not get that from the garage until about 7:30 that evening. Having finally obtained the station wagon, we went to borrow the trailer which was kindly loaned by our Scoutmaster [C. Paul Meyer]. He was not at home so we had to wait until about 9:30 to get the trailer attached to the station wagon. By that time it was dark and our packing of the trailer was done under somewhat difficult circumstances because of this. Also those of us who were working on the packing had never packed a trailer before, so we did not know the actual best methods of doing so. However, about midnight that night we finally finished and went to bed.

The next day luckily was clear and we assembled at the appointed time of six o’clock only to find that there was so little air in the tires of the trailer that with the weight of the load they were practically flat, and therefore had to wait another hour for a garage to open in order to get air.

There was really quite a gathering in the back yard of my office that morning, what with the six boys that were to go, and their parents who had come along to give us a happy send off and incidentally to pass a few, shall we say, sarcastic comments about the way we looked in general. However, without too many major mishaps, we finally got off to a roaring start with excellent weather for the trip. In addition to a well-packed trailer behind we carried a canoe on top of the station wagon. So with the trailer, canoe, six boys and one Scoutmaster, one might say we presented a well-laden caravan.

At this point, we might say something about the boys who were on the trip. They were all Explorers, fourteen years of age or older, and of Star rank or better. The crew included Wally Scofield, Star; Bill Hilliard, Life; Robert Strahota, Star; Joe Antonecchia, Star; Frank Manning, Life; and John Miller, Eagle.

The distance from Katonah to Fryeburg, Main e, our destination, is approximately 330 miles. There is not any point in saying much about the trip up except that the good weather held all the way and we all had an excellent time. About half way up, however, our load began to list somewhat to port. At Bennington, Vermont, it took on the appearance of a relaxed hump of a dromedary camel, just about ready to give up the ghost. We stopped off and reinforced the load simply by getting a hundred feet of quarter-inch hemp and tying it up like a Christmas package. The load rode very well from there on until about 25 miles from destination, when it began to rub on one of the rear tires of the trailer. However, a few more minor adjustments and we arrived at camp with all that we had brought along. Because of the distance to be travelled, we did not attempt to camp en route but stopped in a restaurant for our meal.

We arrived at camp just about dusk, so we had the great joy of setting up our tents after dark. It seems that we did some of our major undertakings after dark. More about that later. We had three 7x7 wall tents and a baker which we arranged in the form of a cross with an open area in the center. This apparently worked out very well. This was a rather deluxe camping expedition since we set our tents up in the woods on a vacant lot and were able to use the ice box facilities of our old cottage which was about a hundred yards away. We were all good and tired the night of our arrival so we went to bed early and slept late the next morning.

The first day we spent tidying up the camp, getting the boats and canoes ready, in general just getting the lay of the land and getting acclimated. We were all very much refreshed by an after dark swim in the clear mountain lake by the name of Lovewell’s Pond. We had one unfortunate accident that first night. One of the boys accidentally stepped on a clam shell and cut the sole of his foot quite badly. However, this did not seem to interfere very much with his activities during our week in the woods.

One of the things we had planned to do was to climb Mt. Washington, which as you know is the second-highest mountain east of the Mississippi River. Therefore all during our first Sunday, we listened to the weather reports on the car radio. The last minute Monday morning we decided that this would be the day to climb Mt. Washington. None of the boys had ever climbed a mountain quite that high before and some were a little bit worried that it would be nothing more than an uphill walk. They were yelling for a little hand-over-hand work, so I decided to take them up Huntington Ravine Trail, which is supposed to be the toughest trail on the mountain. As mountain climbing goes, Huntington Ravine is a very easy trail, but for neophytes who are not used to that sort of thing, it presents a few difficulties, in fact, one might even say hazards. There are several places on that trail where it is absolutely necessary to go hand-over-hand and there are a few somewhat tense moments to say the least.

About half way up one of the difficult passages, at which point I found myself carrying three packs, a camera accidentally slipped out of one of the packs and bounced down over a precipice, so I had to go down and retrieve that. Luckily there was no damage to the camera, but I can’t say the same for my shins. I hope that you appreciated that little maneuver, Frank!

Just as we were getting up over the head wall, the clouds rolled in and I was frankly somewhat concerned, because to be caught half way up that mountain with the clouds in is not an enviable position. However, they lifted long enough for us to get to the top, so all is well that ends well.

After a pause for rest and a look around the top of the mountain and purchasing a few souvenirs in the hotel, we started the downward trek, coming by way of Lion’s Head Trail. It was not nearly as difficult but still presents its problems. On the way down, one of the boys turned his ankle so he could not quite keep up with the rest. I stayed back with him while the rest ran ahead. About half way down, we ran into a very nice cloudburst. It was impossible to remain dry, so we just walked in the rain and “enjoyed” it. I shall never listen again to any weather reports or base the planning of a climbing expedition on what they say. Needless to say, we were somewhat wet on arriving at the bottom of the mountain, so instead of being true campers, we decided to be city slickers. We stopped off for dinner at a restaurant and went to the movies in North Conway. By the time we got back to camp, we were all dried out and everybody was very happy and rested. Needless to say, we really slept that night.

The next day we decided to do a little canoeing. It is an excellent area for canoeing at Fryeburg. One can take the canoe a distance of three miles, put in to the Saco River and go a distance of about twenty-five or thirty miles downstream, and come out at the end of the lake on which we were camped. On two trips we go the three canoes up to the starting place on the river with our supplies, and some friends brought our cars back for us. We took this canoe trip the easy way and made an overnight stop en route. Aside from the fact that one canoe leaked and had to be bailed out about every hour and a half, there were no mishaps en route. The water was a little cold for swimming, but we did not mind that very much. We had a stretch of difficult paddling due to the fact that a strong wind had some up and was blowing against us at a greater rate than the current was going with us down stream. All that did was give us sore backs, which none of us minded too much.

We took time to explore all the little inlets and one or two small ponds en route and did a little fishing. There are two portages on this route, one around a series of rapids and one around a dam. No difficulties encountered. I don’t know why it is, but food on a camping trip mixed with sand and ashes always tastes so much better than even the best food that mother can prepare. Our trip was no exception in this respect.

Late the second afternoon of the trip, we stopped off at a small pond, Pleasant Pond by name, for a little pickerel fishing. Luckily, the fish were biting fairly well and several of us caught pickerel. Unfortunately we caught nothing else.

The last three days of our trip expedition were devoted to merit badge work in Canoeing, Fishing, Cooking, and Swimming. We had a lot of fun one night playing Flashlight Commandos. I can heartily recommend the Maine woods as an ideal place for that game. Two nights in a row, we had visitors in the form of raccoon. Luckily, the only thing they stole from us was a loaf of bread. However, about midnight one night we got one raccoon cornered up a tree. So help me, I have never seen a more embarrassed looking animal in all my life. He looked exactly as though he had been caught with his pants down, and believe it or not, the next morning there was a pair of pants hanging high up in that tree. Whether or not they belonged to the raccoon, I do not know, but the whole situation was very suspicious.

It is strange what latent talents will appear. Two of the boys did a spirited ballet dance after the raccoons. Most of us nearly died laughing. However, I do not think the raccoons appreciated the entertainment quite as much as the rest of us. All in all, we did not see as much wild life as I had hoped. Moose and bear have been seen in those parts, but we were not that fortunate. Aside from the raccoons, about all we managed to see were a great number of eagles, a few loons, various and sundry other sorts of water birds and small mammals.

The trip home was essentially uneventful with the exception that we did have the load arranged this time, but in spite of it we managed to drop off one cot which we retrieved without difficulty.

I personally learned three things on this trip. One, How not to pack a trailer; Two, How to pack a trailer; Three, partly how to back a trailer.

It goes without saying that we all had a perfectly wonderful time and are prepared to go back again next year, only next time for two weeks. We had a lot of good camping experience, a lot of new experiences, and a whale of a lot of good clean fun. I should mention the fact that on this particular lake, there are two girls’ camps, and it was fairly obvious that at certain times of the day, usually the times when the girls went swimming, I could never find the boys or the canoes. I won’t say they went to visit the girls’ camps, but at those periods they were never around our camp.

So long until next year.”

P.S. - Doc would serve as Assistant Scoutmaster for two more years under C. Paul Meyer before being promoted to Scoutmaster in 1956, a post he would hold until his passing in 2008.

Katonah ties for first at Combined Fall Camporee

Katonah Troop 1 particpated in the Combined Manitoga-Muscoot Fall Camporee held at Durland Scout Reservation at Clear Lake on October 23-25. The weather was rainy (heavy at times), but our three patrols managed to get through all five stations (First Aid, Map Reading, Cooking, Signal Flags, and Pioneering) with flying colors! Katonah shared top honors with Ossining Troop 49 from Manitoga District, who, coincidentally, were our neighbors for the weekend. More details to follow!

New Troop Schedule Posted

The new troop schedule for 2009-2010 can be found here. Our first meeting will be September 17 at Katonah Elementary School. Scouts should attend in full uniform, and bring their Scout Handbook to every meeting. All Scouts should arrive at the gym by 7:15pm.

Our first activity will be a day trip to the Orange County Fair Speedway for a Demolition Derby night on September 19! We will need drivers for this event (not to enter in the Demolition Derby, but to bring our Scouts back and forth to Middletown!). Hope to see you there!

Troop 1 at Camp Read - 2009

August 2009 - Camp Bucksin at Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation

This past August Troop 1 Katonah spent a week at Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation where our troop earned more than 50 merit badges during our stay at Camp Buckskin! The troop stayed in our "traditional" location at Cimarron campsite. We carried out different activities within the campsite, including flag-raising ceremonies, and other camp duties such as latrine cleaning and cleaning up garbage along the trails. Throughout the week, the 15 scouts from the troop earned merit badges ranging from Rifle Shooting, to Archery, to Reptile and Amphibian Study, to Swimming, to Canoeing. Together, these total over 50 merit badges among 15 scouts.

Our troop also took part in many camp-wide events. There was the "The Silver Bullet," which was a rifle shooting competition, and "Robinhood," which was an archery competition. "The Carboard Boat Race" consisted of troops trying to build the best boat made completely out of cardboard and 30 feet of duct-tape that they were issued. The "Buckskin Triathalon" which was a competition consisting of running, swimming, and rifle shooting. There was the traditional "Pie Eating Contest" to see who could eat a pie the fastest, and finally the "Relay Race" which was a distance race that went all throughout Camp Read.

We went outside of camp for some activities. We explored the underground caves at Camp Waubeeka. Our troop also did the "Low COPE" course which was a set of team building activities. We also completed the "High COPE" course, which was a challenging obstacle course where you were suspended about 50 feet off the ground! We completed challenges like the "Giant's Ladder" where the rungs got farther and farther apart as you went up, and the "Tight Rope Walk" where you had to make your way across a thin cable without falling off. We finished with a long zipline going to a platform far away.

One of our favorite activities is the zipline at the Summit Base waterfront! We were also going to do our usual hike up Mt. Stephens to see to see the amazing view at sunrise, but the event was rained out.

All in all it was a fun, productive and succesful week for the scouts of Troop 1 Katonah. Everyone is looking forward to another great year at Camp Read!

Summer Camp - Aug. 9-15

Well HELLO CAMPERS!! Yes, it is that time again. Time to start thinking about Boy Scout Summer Camp! Once again, Troop 1 Katonah will be enjoying an exciting week (Aug. 9-15) at Camp Buckskin, at the Curtis S. Read Scout reservation in the Adirondacks. Just a few reminders:

-We will be leaving KES at 8:30 on Sunday, August 9 and returning approximately 2pm on Saturday, August 15.
-We have 15 boys going and 6 fathers!. But if anyone knows of anyone else who would like to go, please let me know. There is still time to register.
-PLEASE RE READ the SUMMER CAMP PARENT'S GUIDE!! VERY IMPORTANT. MUCH INFORMATION TO KNOW BEFORE DEPARTURE.
-Medical forms are not a last-minute thing since they are so complicated this year - Doctors won't like them. When you have them, please keep them and give them to me when we leave.
-Parents, please also sign the "out of camp" permission forms just in case we decide to do an out of camp activity.
-Some activities we will do this year are "Low or High COPE" depending on age group, the Wabeeka Caves, Zip Line, Troop Shoot, and a HIKE / Sleepover on Mt. Stevens.
