Troop 1 Katonah, New York

Katonah Troop 1 participated in the villages annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26. Staging began at the Katonah Fire House where our boys lined up in proper parade formation, carrying the American flag and the Troop flag. This year, Patrol Leader Kyle Winthers led the troop through the parade route, past enthusiastic supporters. The parade left the firehouse, headed down Katonah Avenue, past Depot Plaza, and then up Park Way to the circle where we paused for memorial ceremonies and remarks. We then continued down Bedford Road and concluded at the firehouse, where the boys were treated to ice cream from the KFD . This year we marched with the Webelos who just joined our Troop, swelling our ranks to more than 20 boys, which made for an impressive showing at this year's parade.

For the 2008 Muscoot District Spring Camporee , not only did we travel out of district, we traveled out of state! About 150 Scouts from New York and Connecticut made the journey to Thomaston to visit the Railroad Museum of New England and take a ride on the scenic Naugatuck Railroad. Railroading was the theme for the weekend event (May 3-4), developed by Otto Vondrak , a volunteer at both RMNE and the Westchester -Putnam Council BSA. Planning for the event started back in January, and required careful coordination between RMNE and the BSA. Since this event was to take place out of our district (and out of state!), the Scouts needed to find a suitable place to camp. The Housatonic Council BSA offered the use of Strang Reservation in Goshen , Connecticut. As word spread of the special event, other troops outside our district asked to be a part of it, including a troop from Manitoga District, and one from Housatonic Council . Troop 1 is sponsored by The Katonah Rotary Club . The troop was founded in 1919, one of the oldest in Westchester County. The troop is dedicated to teaching boys good citizenship and life skills through a program that is challenging and fun. These goals continue today and include an emphasis on outdoor activities such as camping and hiking and a dedication to community service. We schedule several hikes and campouts throughout the year, visiting local reservations and nature trails. We also take advantage of camping at Durland Scout Reservation (formerly Clear Lake) in Putnam Valley, New York. We also try to include long-distance historical trips, such as Bennington Battlefield, the Boston Freeedom Trail, Fort Ticonderoga, and many more. Besides the camping and hiking we do with our troop, there are three district events we regularly attend, the Fall Camporee, the Winter Klondike Derby, and the Spring Camporee. We also encourage our boys to attend summer camp with the troop. Our chartering organization is the Katonah Rotary Club . Boy Scouts Boy Scouting, one of the traditional membership divisions of the BSA , is available to boys who have earned the Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old or have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10, or who are 11, but not yet 18 years old. Click here for pictures from Summer Camp 2008! As is true to Troop 1 Katonah tradition, we are again staying at the Cimarron campsite at Buckskin at Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation . We will leave Katonah at 8:30 AM on Sunday, August 9 and return the following Saturday, August 15, 2009. It is important that every parent read the "Parent Guide" given to each Scout. In it are all of the rules of the road, including activity and merit badge opportunities. To register for camp, please give Chris Kristensen a check for $320 made out to Westchester-Putnam Council, BSA along with the Scout's full name, address, phone number, and birthdate. Also please know that upon arrival at camp, each Scout must have the official Medical Form (now 5 pages long!) filled out by your family doctor. Lastly, please let Mr. Kristensen know what merit badges you would like to take ASAP, since some classes close out very fast. We can't register Scouts for merit badges until we have the $32...
