Klondike Derby was fun and challenging

On Saturday, January 24, Troop 1 Katonah took a trip to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation to attend the 2009 Muscoot District Klondike Derby. The three patrols in our troop were required to construct a dogsled entirely out of natural materials, using only rope lashings for fastenings. My patrol, the "Swamp Chickens," had the idea of constructing our sled completely out of bamboo. it was a very sturdy sled once completed. Nick, the patrol leader of the "Rabid Racoons" patrol, had his patrol construct their sled out of more traditional wooden poles. Peter, the patrol leader of the "Mad Monkeys" patrol, also made their sled out of wooden poles. We all had impresive sleds in our troop this year. When we got to Pound Ridge Reservation, we had to get our gear together and get it into the sled. Once we checked in, we stood around in the 20 degree weather waiting for the rest of the troops to arrive, and for the opening ceremony to start. When they turned us loose, we

Katonah Takes Top Honors in 2009 Klondike Derby

Once again, Troop 1 Katonah took top honors at the 2009 Muscoot District Camporee, with two of our three fielded patrols taking top honors. Our three patrols competed at four skill stations including First Aid (which was also run by our Troop), Map Reading (by Troop 271 Mahopac), Firebuilding (by Troop 440 Patterson), and the Stretcher Scramble (by Troop 101 Vista). At the end of the day's activities, all patrols took part in sled races (organized by Jon Meres of Troop 1 Mount Kisco) while scores were tallied and awards determined. Also thanks to Troop 1 Brewster, who kept our Klondike Cafe fully stocked and served many hungry Klondikers. Thanks to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation for allowing us to come back another year. Stay tuned for more details!

Troop 1 at Camp Read, 1965

This photo is from the collection of Russ Padden. Russ was a member of Katonah Troop 1 in the 1960s, and has many vivid memories of attending Camp Read , the council's summer camp in the Adirondacks. In 1965, many boys from Troop 1 attended camp as part of a Provisional Troop with other boys from other troops. Here is the group photo from 1965, with some names of Troop 1 members added. Pictured are Walter Swartz, Craig Warner, Russ Padden, Chris Farrell, Dave Yang, Mike Yang, Doug Kitchen, Eric Johnson, Bruce Kitchen, Dick L'Eplattenier, Glen Farebrother, Jeff Ruger, Jim Peterson, Eric Larson and Mike Archie. There are a few Troop 1 Katonah members that we can't identify. Do you recognize anyone? Click on the photo to view a larger image...

Schedule Changes for January and February

Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable holiday season with their families and friends. It's time for another great year of Scouting! We have a couple of schedule changes to announce for January and January. We had originally scheduled a meeting where we would go climbing with Eagle Scout Travis Winthers. The bad news is that we have to postpone this event to a later date. The good news is that Travis has been accepted to the DEP Police Academy! Travis will begin his training immediately, and hopefully we can reschedule our climbing event at a later date. Instead of climbing, we will have a regular Troop Meeting on Thursday, January 15. We had also scheduled a date to go see a hockey game at West Point . This will be rescheduled to Saturday, February 21 . This will give our Scouts more time to work on and complete their Klondike sleds for the upcoming Muscoot District Klondike Derby on Saturday, January 24 . We will be working on our Scout skills leading up to the eve
