Troop 1 Katonah, New York

Since KES is closed today, we will not be meeting tonight.  Our meeting next Thursday will be held at St Mary's due to concert rescheduling at KES.  Just a reminder too that the Annual Dinner is scheduled for 2/10 at the Methodist Church Hall and make a note that the meeting on the 17th will be at St Mary's as well.  Please let us know how many people to expect from your families for the dinner on the 10th. 

The 2011 Muscoot Klondike Derby will be held at Durland Scout Reservation at Clear Lake this Saturday, January 22.  We will depart from KES at 6:45am. Our two patrols will compete in the event, testing their skills (and their sleds and their snowshoes) against the elements. This year, the requirements for the sleds are that they must be able to "transform" into an emergency shelter, using any materials the Scouts see fit. The Mad Monkeys Patrol debuted their sled at last night's troop meeting at Katonah Elementary School.     The Mad Monkeys Patrol sled looks very sleek and angular. Did we mention it is equipped with cupholders?   The wings unfold, not unlike a DeLorean... This year, the requirements for the sleds are that they must be able to "transform" into an emergency shelter, using any materials the Scouts see fit.   The Swamp Chicken patrol demonstrates their idea for a sled.   The Swamp Chicken's sled could be tipped on its side and used as a shelter.   Scoutmaster Hank Tschorn demonstrates the basics of throwing an ice rescue rope.

Happy New Year! Our first meeting of 2011 will be tonight, Thursday January 6. We'll be planning our activities for the Muscoot Klondike Derby coming up on January 22. Also, don't forget this weekend we will be traveling to West Point to see the Army Black Knights (5-12-1) battle the Tigers (10-8-2)  from Rochester Institute of Technology . Tickets have already been pre-ordered, and reserved only for Scouts and guests who placed reservations with Kyle. Bring $8.00 to the event to cover the cost of the ticket. We will be leaving from KES at 4:45pm! You may want to bring a bag dinner. Expect to return between 10:30 and 11:00pm.

Thursday, Dec. 9 - Board of Review Scouts going up for rank advancement should have completed their Scoutmaster's conference and should be ready to go before the Board of Review. Arrive in full uniform, with your Scout Handbook and all related requirements signed off. Saturday, December 11 - Visit to U.S.S. Intrepid We will be meeting at KES at 7:45am. All Scouts should arrive IN UNIFORM and with a bag lunch. The cost of admission is $22 for adults and $17 for boys. You must arrive in uniform, this is an official Troop Outing. Thursday, December 16 - Winter Court of Honor Friends and family are invited to join us for our Winter Court of Honor! Please arrive in full uniform at the normal time.

Reminder that there will be no Troop Meeting on Thursday, November 11 account Veteran's Day. Let us take this time to thank our men and women of the armed forces for protecting the freedoms and liberties we enjoy every day!

On Novenber 6, Troop 1 Katonah traveled north to hike to Kaaterskill Falls , one of the tallest waterfalls in New York State. An area made famous by the paintings of Thomas Cole and the lore of Washington Irving, the falls continue to draw thousands to enjoy its beauty. This the troop's third year visiting the falls, thanks to Assistant Scoutmaster Bob Suda. We departed at 7:15 and arrived at about 10 o'clock in the morning at our launch point for our day hike. We spent the day on a hike going up one of the mountains, which was approximately 3,200 feet above sea level.
