Pound Ridge Campout this Saturday

Scouts from Troop 1 Katonah will assemble at Katonah Elementary School on Saturday, March 26 at 9:00am for our first campout of Spring! We will be camping at Pound Ridge Reservation, and primarily focusing on map reading, orienteering, and cooking skills! See you patrol leader or contact Scoutmaster Hank Tschorn for more information. Mr. Eisenhower stopped by to remind everyone that our troop raised more than $600 for special needs Scouts at the Bowl-o-Ree last weekend. Patches were issued to each participant, and several of our Scouts got special t-shirts for raising more than $100 individually.

Troop 1 helps raise money for Scouts with special needs at annual Bowl-o-ree

Executive Board Member Bill Kelly had the vision and desire twenty-nine years ago to organize a fundraiser to support youth with special needs. As a result of organizing each of the past twenty-eight Bowl-O-Rees, over a million dollars has been raised to support this initiative. Our in-school Champions program for youth with special needs is being offered to nearly 1,000 youth in the Yonkers and Mt. Vernon School Districts. Troop 1 Katonah participated in the William E. Kelly Bowl-o-ree on March 6, 2011 at the Carmel Bowl. We had 7 boys bowl and they raised over $660. All the boys will receive patches and three boys raised over $100 each and will receive t-shirts.

Photos from 2011 Klondike Derby

The 2011 Muscoot District Klondike Derby was held on January 22 at Durland Scout Reservation at Clear Lake. Weather conditions were perfect for the Klondike, bright and sunny with a healthy snow pack on the ground. The "Transformers" event spawned many interesting sled designs. Mount Kisco Troop 1 took first place in the event, followed by Mahopac Troop 271 and Katonah Troop 1 . Photos by Otto M. Vondrak .   When I arrived at Durland to set up for the event, the moon was still up and the sun had not yet risen.   The Mad Monkeys Patrol prepares their sled for the day's events.   Billy leads the Swamp Chickens Patrol at the event check-in.   Troops lined up at the starting point of the event.    Troops lined up at the starting point for the Klondike Derby. More than 250 participants were at the event.   After a few words from Otto, the troops hit the train to begin the Klondike Derby.   Troops hit the trail!   The Snowshoe Relay Race was conducted by Vista 101. Webelos Klondike, Bowl-o-Ree this weekend

The Klondike Derby is a winter competition event for Webelos Scouts during which dens pull their Klondike sleds along a course in the woods. Along the way, they will be tested on Scouting skills at about 10 stations. The event finishes with the awarding of “The Pole”, patches and ribbons. The Klondike Derby provides an opportunity for Scouts to apply their Scouting skills in a fun competition. The event comes alive with the use of the lore of the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon. Troop 1 Katonah will be running the Knot Tying Station at the Muscoot Distruct Webelos Klondike Derby this Saturday, March 5. We need volunteers (youth and adults) to help run this station.
