USS Intrepid trip postponed

Hello Troop 1 Katonah,

I just checked the status of the USS Intrepid and it remains closed at this time. If per chance it does open in the next couple of weeks it will primarily only be the USS Intrepid, the Growler (submarine) and the Concorde that you will be able to view. The Space Shuttle Enterprise received some damage to its vertical tail fin during hurricane Sandy and will be repaired and reopen to the public when it is done. With that being said we are going to POSTPONE the USS Intrepid trip to a later date, perhaps in the late winter to early spring so we can also see the Space Shuttle Enterprise along with all of the other exciting aircrafts like the A-12 Blackbird.

In lieu of this change of events we are going to go visit the Military Museum of Southern New England , located in Danbury Connecticut on December 15th. In the preservation of our Nations Military History the museums intention was to maintain the memory of the American Tank Destroyer Units of the second world war. They have a collection of over 10,000 artifacts covering all of the armed forces of the United States. There is also a vivid cross section of 20th century American Military History, and many of their vehicles are extremely rare-often the only example in the Western Hemisphere. Admission for the museum is $4 for those 5 to 18 years of age and $6 for adults.

We will gather at KES at 9:15am, depart @ 9:30 am and we should return to KES sometime just after noon given that the museum is a half hour away. The address for the Military Museum of Southern New England is 125 Park Avenue, Danbury Ct. 06810. Phone number (203) 790-9277.

Please email me if you plan to attend this event so I can get a head count of who is going.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me…. ( h ) 914 232 8834 or ( c ) 914 906 4917

This should be a fun time for all , a good exploration of the past military methods , equipment and a great time together as a troop.

Yours in Scouting,
Thomas Adamec, Assistant Scoutmaster

Our visit to the Campfire Club of America

On Thursday April 16, 2009, Troop 1 Katonah visited the Campfire Club of America at their private camp in Chappaqua, where we were taught about conservation and preservation of the world's wildlife. When we arrived, we were introduced to the two men in charge of the club. They told us a little bit about how the club was started back around the turn of the century. Among their famous charter members were Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Thompson Seton (the first Chief Scout), William Hornaday . The Campfire Club treated us to an amazing dinner which consisted of homemade burgers, hot dogs, french fries, and some deserts. After dinner, we walked around the lodge and observed the different trophy animals that were displayed all over the club. One room was dedicated to North America which consisted of examples of many animals from across the continent. In the other room, there many examples of wildlife from Africa. It was pretty cool. Who would have known there was that many animals in Afric...
