Troop 1 at Camp Read - 1964

Russ Padden has supplied us with a variety of vintage photos from the 1960s. Here's a photo of Katonah Troop 1, posed in front of the Camp Buckskin dining hall at Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation... 1964! "Our campsite was the first one on the left after you walked past the dining hall - with the hall on your right," Russ explains. "One of the greatest memories was cllimbing a 'mountain' and picking blueberries which they made into Blueberry pie...I always suspected they 'supplemented' what we picked." Left to right in the front row are Walt Swartz, Craig Warner, Chris Farrell, Chuck Senkier, Doug Kitchen, Jim Peterson, Russ Padden and Paul Leather. In the back row are Dick L'Eplattenier, Scoutmaster Arthur Peterson and Eric Larson. The troop had spent two weeks at Camp Read in 1964, and Troop 1 will be returning to Camp Read once again this summer.

Also from the collection of Russ Padden is his shadowbox documenting his time in the Troop as part of the Head Hunters Patrol! "Troop 1 Katonah had a major impact on my life. There were 120 boys in the troop. When we went to the camporee, we were one side of formation... the rest of the troops made up the other two sides."

What a great collection, thank you for sharing it with us, Russ! More items to come.

Our visit to the Campfire Club of America

On Thursday April 16, 2009, Troop 1 Katonah visited the Campfire Club of America at their private camp in Chappaqua, where we were taught about conservation and preservation of the world's wildlife. When we arrived, we were introduced to the two men in charge of the club. They told us a little bit about how the club was started back around the turn of the century. Among their famous charter members were Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Thompson Seton (the first Chief Scout), William Hornaday . The Campfire Club treated us to an amazing dinner which consisted of homemade burgers, hot dogs, french fries, and some deserts. After dinner, we walked around the lodge and observed the different trophy animals that were displayed all over the club. One room was dedicated to North America which consisted of examples of many animals from across the continent. In the other room, there many examples of wildlife from Africa. It was pretty cool. Who would have known there was that many animals in Afric
