Railroad Campout
Saturday, February 28
Leave KES at 8:00am
This weekend, Troop 1 Katonah will be "working on the railroad" in Thomaston, Connecticut. The Naugatuck Railroad will be our host for the day, as we tour their facilities and learn about railroading, history, and preservation. We will be staying at the comfortable Mohawk Cabin at Camp Mattatuck, operated by Connecticut Rivers Council, BSA. The cabin is equipped with 15 bunks and a wood stove, which will be most welcome after spending our day on the railroad. Throughout the day, we will also be working on some requirements for the Railroading merit badge.
We will depart Katonah Elementary School at 8:00am, and arrive at Camp Mattatuck a little after 9:00am. We will drop off our gear and head over to Thomaston station, where our tour guides will meet us at 10:00am. After a tour of the depot and the equipment on the display track, we will board our private train for a short trip to Thomaston Shop.
At Thomaston Shop, we will break for lunch. Patrols will supply hot dogs, hamburgers, or anything else they want to grill to eat for lunch. After lunch, we will tour the railroad's repair and restoration facility. The Scouts will have the opportunity to tour a working diesel locomotive, see a 1920's coach undergo an extensive rebuild, and learn what it takes to keep antique railroad equipment in top condition.
After our tour, we will once again board our train and make a service stop at Jericho Bridge. Here we will perform a service project for the railroad and help cut and clear brush away from the bridge. Scouts should bring pruners, cutters, and bow saws. Adults may bring chainsaws or other motorized tools appropriate for the job. Scouts should have a pair of sturdy work gloves or gardening gloves, and consider wearing work boots instead of hiking boots. At no time should Scouts be wearing sneakers or other footwear without ankle support. The service project will count towards a Scout's required hours.
After we complete the service project, we will board our train for the return to Thomaston Station. We will return to camp for the evening, Patrol Leaders should plan for dinner and breakfast in camp. We will return to Katonah on Sunday morning. Contact your Patrol Leader and let him know that you will be attending!
