Announcements for May

SPRING CAMPOREE RESULTS
The Swamp Chickens patrol took Third Place overall at the Muscoot District Spring Camporee on May 4-6 at Durland Scout Reservation. The Mad Monkeys patrol was not far behind. Both patrols worked hard and did their best, wrapping up a very successful year for our troop at District competition.

MAY 17 MEETING AT AMERICAN LEGION
Our next meeting will take place at American Legion Post 1575 on Route 22 next to the Katonah Museum of Art. We will be meeting at 6:00pm so that we can enjoy a cookout with the veterans and talk about citizenship and what it means to be a good citizen. Scouts should turn out in FULL UNIFORM.

TROOP PLANT SALE
I just received notice that the plants will be arriving on Tuesday afternoon so if anyone is around between 1 and 3 that day, please let me know.  We can use help unloading the truck.  I will give everyone a call who ordered plants once they are ready for pick up which will probably be by mid-morning on Wednesday.  We will have lots of plants for anyone interested, so please feel free to stop by after Wednesday if you didn't place an order and spread the word to your friends!. Thanks to Kathy Kohler and Janet Winthers for offering their help to sell plants on Saturday, too!  —Mary Tschorn

GETTYSBURG TRIP JUNE 8-11
Our trip to Gettysburg is fast approaching and I wanted to send this email to get everyone up to speed.  As this is the 150th anniversary year of the battle, it should be a special time to go. We will leave KES on Friday, June 8 at 4:00pm. We will return late afternoon on Sunday, June 11. We will need drivers to help make this trip possible. Gettysburg is approximately 4.5 hours from Katonah.

Directions to our campsite on the battlefield (the McMillan Woods Campsite) can be found on their web site. The site hold 25 people and will be in a field with many others.  We do have our own designated spot.  There are bathrooms and water.  Firewood for fires in established fire rings must be bought locally. Be aware that ticks are bad this year and bring appropriate repellent.

No backpacks or large bags in the visitor center or museum.  For the museum, cyclorama, movie, and bus guided tour $40 will be needed.  Extra spending money is recommended. Patrols must bring their own food and gear.

There are BSA patches to earn.  The basic patch will be gotten at the visitor center once we participate in the program. Additional patch segments may be earned if certain hikes are made.  The Johnny Reb hike at 4 miles seems possible.  The Billy Yank hike at 10 miles, seems way too much.  We will see how it goes.

Please attend this exciting and historical trip! Email Asst. Scoutmaster Chris Kristensen with your RSVP right away so we can make preparations for this trip.

Our visit to the Campfire Club of America

On Thursday April 16, 2009, Troop 1 Katonah visited the Campfire Club of America at their private camp in Chappaqua, where we were taught about conservation and preservation of the world's wildlife. When we arrived, we were introduced to the two men in charge of the club. They told us a little bit about how the club was started back around the turn of the century. Among their famous charter members were Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Thompson Seton (the first Chief Scout), William Hornaday . The Campfire Club treated us to an amazing dinner which consisted of homemade burgers, hot dogs, french fries, and some deserts. After dinner, we walked around the lodge and observed the different trophy animals that were displayed all over the club. One room was dedicated to North America which consisted of examples of many animals from across the continent. In the other room, there many examples of wildlife from Africa. It was pretty cool. Who would have known there was that many animals in Afric
